VCU EdD Capstone Team to Study KGCS ELGs

KGCS is pleased to share that our Early Literacy Group intervention was selected as a VCU EdD Capstone Project.  During the 2013-14 school year, a team of EdD students, chaired by Dr. Katherine Cumings Mansfield, will study our early literacy group implementation.  The team will meet with Ms. Darcy and review PALS data.  They will also observe our early literacy teams and may interview teachers and instructors.  At the conclusion of their study, we will receive a research report detailing their findings.  We will have more information as the team refines their study questions.

Read Aloud Days

Our ELG lessons are designed to maximize student practice around key early literacy skills.  It is important that your lessons adhere to the guidelines and materials provided.  Students thrive on predictability and structure, but instructors need a break from the repetitiveness every once in awhile!

Beginning in October, on the first instructional day of each month, consider sharing a favorite picture book with your group of students.  Select anything from your personal collection, the classroom library, or the school library.  If you would like some suggestions, please ask Ms. Darcy or your school librarian.

This is a chance for you to connect with students and to introduce some creativity into your schedule.  Read the book aloud at least once, and invite students to make connections or retell their favorite part of the story.

Please DO NOT present this as a "reward" for group or individual behavior or participation, as these things are basic expectations of your daily lessons.

Please DO NOT present this day as a "fun day," as all days spent learning to read are fun!  Simply tell students that each month, you will take a day to do something different to help them learn what readers do.

If you would not like to read aloud on these days, you are welcome to continue your lessons as planned.
